About & licenses
Last updated 3 November 2026
UK Live Traffic is a live map of the UK's roads, buses, trains, ships and aircraft, with directions and turn-by-turn navigation, built from public open data. It has no accounts and shows no adverts. The website is free, apart from three map layers (radon, mining hazard and council boundaries) that need UK Live Traffic Plus, an optional subscription sold in the Android app. The app's Android Auto car screen and its guidance with the screen off cost nothing.
Who runs it
UK Live Traffic is run by Pakman Project. Questions, corrections and requests about your data: pakmanproject@gmail.com.
The code is open source: github.com/Pakman-Project/UKLiveTraffic. This is build mw22xdbl, which is worth quoting if you report a fault.
Data and credits

- Planned road works on National Highways roads, found through data.gov.uk; road closures by councils and utility companies in England, from the Department for Transport's Street Manager open data; National Highways traffic sensors (WebTRIS); the Department for Transport's road traffic counts. All Open Government Licence v3.0.
- Road closures in traffic orders
- Digital Traffic Regulation Orders (D-TRO), Department for Transport: contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.

- Street lights
- Where councils say their street lights are, each list under its own open licence (the Open Government Licence v3.0 for all of them so far), with the outline of each area from the Office for National Statistics: Leeds City Council, Street lights (unmetered), on Data Mill North; Lancashire County Council; Sheffield City Council, the lights on the highway network that Amey Hallam Highways maintains; Copyright City of Edinburgh Council, contains Ordnance Survey data © Crown copyright and database right 2026; Wigan Council; Nottingham City Council, contains Ordnance Survey data © Crown copyright and database right 2026; Dundee City Council, © Crown copyright and database rights Ordnance Survey 100023371; Perth & Kinross Council, contains Ordnance Survey data © Crown copyright and database right 2026; City of York Council, © Crown copyright and database rights Ordnance Survey 100020818; © Bracknell Forest Council, with Ordnance Survey data; Stirling Council; London Borough of Lambeth; City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council, contains Ordnance Survey data © Crown copyright and database right 2026; London Borough of Camden; Derbyshire County Council; Darlington Borough Council; Department for Infrastructure (Northern Ireland).

- Collision hotspots
- Road collisions from the Department for Transport's road safety data, which contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
- Flood warnings
- This uses Environment Agency flood and river level data from the real-time data API (Beta). Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Natural Resources Wales flood warnings come from its live flood warnings API, which gives one point for each area, so each is drawn as a circle round that point, not as the flood's own outline. Contains Natural Resources Wales information © Natural Resources Wales and Database Right. All rights Reserved. Used under the Open Government Licence v3.0. That API has no guaranteed service level, and it does not replace the flood warning systems that Natural Resources Wales runs. The flood warnings shown here, on the map and on a route, are a guide and are not safety critical: follow the official warnings from Floodline, the Environment Agency and Natural Resources Wales.
- Bank holidays
- Bank holiday dates from GOV.UK, used to leave the school warnings off the days schools are shut. Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
- National Highways live data
- Road closures and lane closures, the incidents on the roads (crashes, and lanes shut by signs), the temporary speed limits on roadworks and the messages on the digital road signs, from National Highways' Digital Lab live feeds. Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
- Rain forecast
- Powered by Met Office data: the rain forecast pictures from the Met Office's Weather DataHub (Map Images), used under its terms. This server asks the Met Office for them about once an hour and keeps a copy, so visitors do not reach the Met Office.
- Weather warnings
- Powered by Met Office data: the Met Office's National Severe Weather Warnings from its Weather DataHub, © Crown copyright, used under its terms. This server asks the Met Office for them every ten minutes and keeps the last answer, so visitors do not reach the Met Office; a warning on a route is a heads-up, and the official warnings are what to follow.
- Night light
- Night-time light from NASA's Black Marble (the VIIRS day/night band; Román and others, 2018, Remote Sensing of Environment 210), the median of a year of daily pictures. We acknowledge the use of imagery provided by services from NASA's Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS), part of NASA's Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS).
- Council boundaries
- Council areas from Ordnance Survey's Boundary-Line, used under the Open Government Licence; contains OS data © Crown copyright and database right 2026.
- Radon
- Radon potential from the BGS and UKHSA Indicative Atlas of Radon: BGS © UKRI; contains OS data © Crown copyright; used under the Open Government Licence. We acknowledge the reproduced BGS and UKHSA materials.
- Mining hazard
- Mining hazard (not including coal), the 1 km hex grid from the British Geological Survey: BGS © UKRI; contains OS data © Crown copyright; used under the Open Government Licence.
- Weather
- Forecasts from MET Norway (the Norwegian Meteorological Institute), under CC BY 4.0 (its terms), adapted: we take the hour's forecast for a place and show its temperature, wind (in miles an hour), rain and an icon, with a feels-like temperature we work out from it; the cloud cover behind the low-sun warning comes from the same forecast. Weather warnings from the Met Office (Open Government Licence v3.0).
- News headlines
- Headlines and links from BBC News RSS; each opens the story on the BBC's site.
- The map
- Map pictures from OpenFreeMap: © OpenMapTiles © OpenStreetMap contributors (Open Database Licence).
- Satellite pictures
- Powered by Esri: imagery, and the place names over it, from Esri and the sources its services name, which the map shows with the pictures (on 1 November 2026: Vantor, GeoEye, Earthstar Geographics, CNES/Airbus DS, USDA, USGS, AeroGRID, IGN, TomTom, Garmin, FAO, NOAA, © OpenStreetMap contributors and the GIS User Community), through Esri's ArcGIS Location Platform, used under Esri's terms. The pictures are never kept on your device.
- Heights and the 3D hills
- Ground heights from the Terrain Tiles on Amazon Web Services' open data registry, used for the climbs in the elevation profiles of walks and rides (through our routing server) and for the hills of the 3D map: United Kingdom terrain data © Environment Agency copyright and/or database right 2015. All rights reserved; Europe terrain data produced using Copernicus data and information funded by the European Union - EU-DEM layers; United States 3DEP (formerly NED) and global GMTED2010 and SRTM terrain data courtesy of the U.S. Geological Survey; Global ETOPO1 terrain data U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

- Airport and port guides
- Road traffic from the Department for Transport's road traffic counts (Open Government Licence v3.0); the share of passengers who leave an airport by road is our own estimate for each airport, judged from the transport links it has to the towns round it.
- Street lights
- Where the site has a key for it, Ordnance Survey's National Geographic Database (through the OS Data Hub) says which roads and paths along a walk or ride have street lights. Contains OS data © Crown copyright and database right 2026.
- Plus Codes
- Google's Open Location Code (Apache License 2.0), written again for this site.
- Chinese place names
- From the Chinese names in OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, Open Database Licence) and the labels in Wikidata (CC0); where neither has one, our own translations, which may still have mistakes. Conversion between Chinese scripts uses OpenCC.
